1968 Ford Mustang

The 1968 American  thriller film ‘Bullitt’, starring the late Steve McQueen, arguably showcased the first spectacular car chases in film history. That classic car chase scenes through San Francisco’s busy streets,
showed images of Lt. Frank Bullitt (played by McQueen), driving a Dark Highland Green ’68 Ford Mustang, in hot pursuit of two hit-men in their black ’68 Dodge Charger. The celebrated car chase sequences took around seven minutes to finished and used two similar Mustangs and two identical Chargers in the process.

1964 Aston Martin DB5

Any James Bond film would not be complete, not unless, one sees his favorite British secret agent driving a suave car! In ‘Gold finger’ (third James Bond 007 film), the debonair spy has an Aston Martin DB5 as his partner in  trying to save the world. In the said film, the Aston Martin coupe was installed with several gadgets, including smoke screen, the revolving license plate, and an ejector seat. This sets an example for succeeding Bond films cars being installed with surprising gadgets.

1982 Pontiac Trans-Am

In the original hit television series ‘Knight Rider’, David Hasselhoff (as Michael Knight), has for a  partner KITT, a talking, fully loaded 1982 Pontiac Trans-Am sports model. Do you know how much KITT costs? Just a staggering US $100,000 to build!

Volkswagen Beetle

Ever since it debuted in the short-lived CBS television series ‘Herbie, The Love Bug’  – Herbie, a Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own, gained adoration from young and old alike. Originally an all white 1963 Volkswagen Beetle deluxe ragtop sedan, Herbie and Dean Jones continued their partnership into the big screen with three wacky movies. In the 1969 hit ‘The Love Bug’, Herbie appeared with a red, white and blue racing stripes and his signature number “53″ in his doors.

Austin Mini Cooper S

However, in the 1969 British film ‘The Italian Job’, Michael Caine and his cohorts did that just – using three Minis as their getaway cars! Coming in red, white and blue and with few modifications, these Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S get the job done. 

1969 Dodge Charger

A wacky television series which aired from 1979 to 1985, ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ features two cousins  Bo and Luke Duke (played by John Schneider and Tom Wopat, respectively), racing around Hazzard County, in a 1969 Dodge Charger. The orange General Lee with the number “1” on each door, was of great use in evading the county’s commissioner and his sheriff. Througout the entire length of the show, it is estimated that around 300 Dodge Chargers were used.

1977 Pontiac Trans-Am

A star was born – yes, the Pontiac’s Trans reached super stardom it was featured in the 1977 film ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and Jackie Gleason. Before 1977, Pontiac’s Trans-Am comes only in black with gold striping, but in ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ film series, the car comes with the ‘Chicken’ on its hood.

DeLorean DMC-12

When one travel through time, it is but fitting for one to be driving a sophisticated car – but not in the case of Michael J. Fox! In the science fiction ‘Back to the Future’ movie trilogy, Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox), he had no much choice but to drive a modified  DeLorean DMC-12. The films success help bolster DeLorean DMC-12 car sales and making it an instant celebrity.

A Ford LTD Country Squire Station Wagon becomes Clark Griswold(played by Chevy Chase) ever dependable family vehicle in the 1983 box-office hit ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’. Failing to get a new sports wagon for their cross-country trip toWalley World , Clark Griswold and his family had to do with a failing Ford Country Squire.

Ferrari 308 GTS

The hit television series Magnum P.I. which runs for eight season from 1980 to 1988, showcased a handsome machine, the Ferrari 308 GTS. A perfect match for Thomas Magnum (played by veteran actor Tom Selleck), the tandem run the street of Hawaii often in the company of beautiful ladies.

Jaguar E-Type

Austin Power ( played by Mike Myer) proved himself as a legit spy in the action-comedy film series ‘The Austin Power’. The film’s villains Dr. Evil accusation that the funny-looking Power is a  no-name British super spy was without basis – thanks to Shaguar, a cool Jaguar E-Type roadster with a British flag paint job. Yeah, baby!

Toyota Supra

The hottest car films that hit movie theaters by storm, ‘Fast and Furious’, also showcase a desirable sports car, the Toyota supra. The first installment of action-thriller film hit the widescreen in 2002 and was followed by four more sequels, Fast and Furious has for its plot the adventure of  undercover cop Brian O’Connor (played by Paul walker). One memorable scene from the movie showed images of a 4th generation Toyota supra doing a quarter-mile in 10 seconds.

    So many wonderful cars here. I don’t know how to drive. When talking about cars, my favorite always goes to the unique shape and sharp colors. Among the 12 cars, I like Volkswagen Beetle.

    movies are great ads for cars and other products when they are used by the characters in the scenes. i wonder if the producers are paid by the car companies when their cars were shown in the films.
