How to: Fuel Filter

Explains how to replace a fuel filter on most vehicles.

Description

The fuel filter cleans out the fuel of contaminants and water after it flows through the fuel pump and before it enters the engine. This filter is in many locations, common locations include: In the engine bay in line with the fuel line, in the fuel tank, and underneath the vehicle in line with the fuel line. If the filter is doing its job it will build up a lot of contaminants and eventually clog. The more contaminants in the filter the less fuel flow there will be through the lines. This is a part usually replaced when doing a tune up or when there are starting problems with the motor. If the fuel pump operates but the engine has no fuel in the fuel rail it is one of 3 problems; Fuel tank is empty, Fuel filter is clogged, or there is a leak in the fuel system somewhere.
Tools Needed

Safety Glasses

Small Drain Pan

Wrench(if needed)

Steps

1. Raise and support vehicle.(refer to raising and supporting vehicle)

2. Locate the fuel filter.

3. When located see if it has a nut fitting on one end or if it is held in by plastic clips. If it has a fitting, take your wrench and unscrew it completely. Take the filter out and remember which direction it is facing. FUEL FILTERS ARE DIRECTIONAL. Always make sure the filter is flowing the correct way.

4. If the filter is held in by plastic clips, squeeze the clips and pull the fuel line out. Remove filer and remember what direction it is facing just like it was explained in step 3.

5. Install new filter in the right direction. Tighten the fitting(if applied) or press the fuel line into the filter until the plastic clips snap on.

6. Lower the vehicle and turn the key to accessory, then off. Repeat this 4 or 5 times. This makes the fuel get to the motor so you don’t run the pump completely dry.

7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks. Check for proper operation through a test drive.
