As the ship sails from port, few are aware that the protection of our laws is left on shore. Maritime law takes precedence and it up to the Captain to administer the law. Cruise lines are not monitored as to what type of security they maintain, are not regulated by Health Departments as to how food is stored and prepared, or maintain a medical department large enough to handle more than a few people with illness or injury. The Italian cruise ship that overturned last week showed the lack of control of safety procedures to protect the passengers. Reports of language problems, no safety drills and a staff that was ill prepared to handle a disaster of this size. A cruise line executive pointed out the minimal number of injuries or death that occurred compared to the millions who enjoy their cruise ships. However, if you are one of the few, it is of no consolation to your family that millions had enjoyed their cruise. Two things have come forward due to this tragic accident. First, cruise lines need to be regulated more closely to prevent further accidents and to manage safety features for the passengers. The second issue is that passengers need to be aware of their surroundings, investigate the history of the cruise line, and have a plan for their family/party as to how they will handle the situation if it occurs. The group that faired well in Italy was a group of passengers who were alert and took matters into their own hands to assure their survival. Obviously, the cruise line was not prepared to handle what happened. No one wants to assume the worst, but being aware and prepared can reassure that the dream will be just that.
