In the 70 and the oil crisis in all its glory, Lamborghini’s financial situation was anything but stable. Desperately Seeking revenue, decided to build an SUV for the U.S. military, which at that time was looking for a versatile robust and capable. Thus was born the Lamborghini Cheetah, a military vehicle with no doors and windows, four seats and a V8 5.9 engine and 180 hp Chrysler source of power, to move a weight of 2,042 kg.
Their dynamic was not all good, but could bring no problems with four well-armed soldiers and three-speed automatic transmission made it easy to use. The prototype was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show 1977, but the evidence for the U.S. Army were not satisfactory, the prototype was destroyed and it is said that one of the pieces caused severe damage to the leg of a soldier. AM General won the contract, which yielded the known HMMWV, or Humvee military.
With empty hands and started development, Lamborghini noticed some interest in the vehicle in the Middle East. In 1981 presented next to the jeep Lamborghini Jalpa LM001. Cheetah was a better, more oriented to civilian use. He still rear engine, but was now home to 5.9 American Motors V8 with about 180 hp. Only one prototype was built, hoping to include a V12 in production versions. After the LM001 development continued until the launch of the Lamborghini LM002.
The Lamborghini LM002 was a superlative terrain, the predecessor of the civilian Hummer and all SUV super current, but even more radical and extreme. Nicknamed “Rambo Lambo”, was marketed between 1986 and 1993 worldwide. It was designed to cleave all types of terrain without problems, from rocky desert to dunes because the sheiks would be privileged clients. At the same time to maintain the Lamborghini, with a good performance on tarmac.
