There are various models available in the market today that differ not only in styles, but also pitch controls, with some having fixed controls, and others manual.

Remote control helicopters that are endowed with collective pitch controls allows the simultaneous increase or decrease of the helicopter’s main rotor blades pitch, that results in a faster response to the changes in the lift amount or the helicopter’s vertical thrust. Collective pitch helicopters have engine throttle that in consequence makes the helicopter able to overcome any additional drag by using more throttle whenever the rotor blades are receiving more load for pitch enhancement.

On the other hand, the radio transmitter also have left sticks that functions to control both the throttle and the collective pitch in the vertical direction. This left stick is responsible for the control of the pitch of the tail rotor in case a side-to-side directional movement is observed.

In order to control the cyclical controls or operations of remote control helicopters, the radio transmitter is also endowed with a right stick control that is responsible for the vertical up and down movements of the fore and aft cyclic pitch. This right stick is also responsible for the side-to-side control of the helicopter.

Aside from the independent functions, there are mixed functions too. The mixed functions of the radio transmitter are responsible for the mixing of the collective and throttle functions. These mixed functions are also able to mix the tail rotor and the collective/throttle function. In turn, it gives a fairly good set up of the helicopters.

The pitch curve and throttle controls of remote control helicopters can be set up in relation to the comfort of the user. As a general rule, the throttle must be set up before the pitch curve is set. It is important to note that most helicopters available in the market today have both throttlehold and throttle cut switches.

The hold switch is also found in helicopters, and these are meant for disconnecting the throttle and the collective mix from each other. Whenever the switch is flipped, the full collective pitch is applied to the helicopter, while keeping the engine idle. The throttle cut switch is meant for turning off the motor of the helicopter.

Separate aspects are to be learned properly before anyone can be able to fly a helicopter comfortably. It is best to go with a fixed helicopter if you are just beginning with RC aviation so that you will be able to master the basic controls before moving on to the more complicated RC helicopters.

It is important for rookies to know that they will likely crash their helicopters before they can be proficient, so that they should go for cheaper helicopter models first.
