Sports Cars in Cult Movies Rate an Oscar

Why not have an Academy Awards branch for cars? I’d much rather check out the movie cars on display instead of the movie stars strutting up and down the red carpet – but that’s me …

Oscar/Academy Awards are normally given for the following:

  • Actor in a Leading Role
  • Actor in a Supporting Role
  • Actress in a Leading Role
  • Actress in a Supporting Role
  • Animated Feature Film
  • Art Direction
  • Cinematography
  • Costume Design
  • Directing
  • Documentary Feature
  • Short Film – Animated
  • Best Picture
  • Music (Song)
  • Foreign Language Film … and so on.

If the Oscars ever considered another Academy branch for cars, there would be at least two competitive categories I would pick from that list:

  • Car in a Leading Role
  • Car in a Supporting Role.

There’s no doubt that Audi would receive a swag of nominations, as they’ve featured in:  Iron Man and its sequel, I, Robot, Legally Blonde 2, Ronin, Hitman, About A Boy, and Mission: Impossible II, and The Matrix Reloaded.

Interesting Iron Man Tidbits:  In the Iron Man aka Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) workshop – Cars in a Leading Role:  2008 Audi R8 (it’s V10 produces 386kW;  reaches 100km/h in 4.1 sec;  top speed = 313km/h), 1932 Ford Flathead roadster, Tesla Roadster [prototype], 1967 Shelby Cobra and a Saleen S7.  Other vehicles/Cars in a Supporting Role:  Q7 SUV and an S5 sports sedan (secret agents wheels).  In Iron Man 2:  Audi R8 Spyder (Tony Stark’s wheels) and the A8 TDI (Gwyneth Paltrow aka Pepper Potts, the secretary’s wheels).

Yes, Steve McQueen’s Mustang GT in Bullitt (1968). Those great car stud movies. Watch George C. Scott in The Flim Flam Man (1967) some time and see what he does to Sue Lyon’s new car. Good article.

I think that would be a great idea. These cars certainly deserve some recognition. A very good article.

Loved the topic and the collection. In addition to the above i would add Ford GT 500 “Eleanor” in Gone in 60 seconds. If included in the nominations, this one might pull an upset.

Give me the grace and beauty of animals. Cars quickly put me to sleep. A great article though Elle – plenty to interest most people.
The only ‘Car’ star I had an affinity for was Christine.

    Nice one, Elle.
If you wanted a red car for the red carpet it would have to be the Ford Gran Torino from Starsky and Hutch. As for the Bond Aston Martin from Dr No, it was found the other day in a garage stripped down to its shell. Still, even in that state it was expected to fetch a couple of hundred grand in auction.

I don’t know how i missed this article Elle. Great video’s and pictures. Bullitt starring the late Steve McQueen was the best car chase movie ever made. I always liked those 007 cars because of their weapons and capabilities. Well done Elle dear.
