The Ideal Off-road Tires for Your Vehicle

Very few people have sufficient knowledge to choose the right tires for their vehicles. This article hopes to address a few concerns you might have regarding off-road tires.

It is said that the choosing a good set of tires for your vehicle is as important as purchasing the vehicle itself! However, ver few people have the knowledge to make such a decision. Here are some common issues that might arise when deciding on a suitable set of off-road tires for your vehicle.

Which off-road tire should I opt for?

This is question that crosses every vehicle owner’s mind at some point or the other. The only way to reach an answer is to understand the purpose of tires. Tires serve one primary function: to provide traction. In other words, it is the job of the tire to keep the vehicle on the road. There is no standard tire for all cars. While street tires are suitable only for highways or regular roads, off-road tires are best used on a variety of off-road surfaces.

There are three major types of off-road tires:

All terrain — If you are looking for balance, then all terrain tires are your natural choice. They are meant to be used in a wide variety of environments. Inexpensive and long lasting, these tires make it possible to switch between highways and off-roads at will. They are suitable for driving on ice, mud and dry snow. However, they perform poorly in wet snow.

Mud terrain — For people who spend most of their time driving off-road, mud terrain tires are the ideal choice. Thanks to aggressive tread patterns and larger lugs, their gripping power is astounding. They are especially good for driving in wet snow. However, mud terrain tires are more expensive then their all terrain counterparts. They also lose their tread quicker.

Snow — If you drive a lot in the white stuff, you might want to switch to snow tires. Grooves in the tire tread, known as sipes, cut through the snow and ice providing strong traction in slippery environments.

Once you have selected a tire, you are now ready to choose a wheel.
