Toyota Starlet Ep71 – The Forgotten Rally Car of Japan

Toyota rally car – Ep71 – the car that handles like a go cart!

A rare car that proves to be a nightmare with parts… The Toyota Starlet Ep71.

With a Toyota 2E Engine power output ranged from 65 hp (48 kW) to around 82 hp (61 kW) at 6000 rpm with around 72 ft·lbf (98 N·m) of torque at 3600 rpm to 77 ft·lbf (104 N·m) of torque at 5200 rpm – Nothing fantastic but later the 2E-TE, appearing in 1986, was a turbocharged engine producing lots more power with over 101 hp (75 kW). The even later version, the 2E-TELU produced 110 hp (82 kW). Although Some parts on the 1E and 2E engines are known to be interchangeable, for example the gearboxes match up easily – almost everything for this car was made – for this car. The 2E-TELU for example was not released in any other car Toyota made.

With a 5 Speed Transmission this car was well above the competition but many enthusiates believe the car could do with a 6th gear!

The most common EP71 engine Replacements are the 4EFE, 3SGTE and 4AGE.

Standard Boost levels of 6Psi (low) and 9Psi (high) made the car a winner – operated in car via a switch, combined with the 105KM+ speed warning bell/chime can make a fun, noisy and scary experience.

The Toyota Starlet was originally introduced in 1973 and was a very popular model car, well known for its amazing dependability. The 70 series starlets were released in 1984, and it was new ground, with the first Starlet to have front-wheel drive. 3 Door and 5 Door variations of this car exist.

The 70 Starlet followed the old KP Starlet’s legacy to become a serious favorite in circuit races. It was also a very popular option for Gymkhana  and Dirt Trial competitions.

The launch of Ep71.com last year has proved that a small cult following is emerging – although the website looks like it needs serious development, once completed the world may know more about the amazing Toyota Starlet Ep71
