Porsche museum building seems an alien came down from “War of the Worlds.” Link to Wells’s story ends here, however. Beyond lies the futuristic architecture of the most impressive 80 year history of the automobile.
We are in Stuttgart, the sixth largest city in Germany and industrial center that enjoys the reputation of Baden-Württemberg. From mid Schlossplatz, a pre-arranged market “New Castle” in the eighteenth century baroque architecture, industrial mechanic at the air you’d expect from a city like Stuttgart seems extremely difficult to guess.
In just 15 minutes drive north, but Stuttgart is more convinced of its role in the history of the car, sharp peaks of the old buildings out easily by industrial discharges. Relatively dull landscape suddenly stops right in the middle rounds Porscheplatz once, right by the former Porsche engineering center, rises the museum completed in 2007.
An investment of 50 million and the participation of Austrian architect Delugan Meissl building turned into one of the most spectacular monuments of modern architecture. It is a fascinating presence, a structure whose sense of structural balance seems to defy laws of physics, which aims to reflect the car’s character: part tradition, part innovation.
Beyond the sloping walls of the museum are 80-year history of the least among German car manufacturers, but also the most profitable. Starting from the first engine developed by engineer Ferdinand Porsche no later than 1896, and ending with the Panamera, sedan, coupe concept first shown in 2009, named the same man.
First contact with the museum is a fascinating one. Aligned behind glass walls expects some of the most representative German car of the century. Model 356, first left the factory engineer Ferdinand in 1952, the Carrera GT is parked next to legend, a fireball in which the body is black mirror neon room service. Two completely different machines, at times from a few decades away from each other in terms of chronology, but hundreds of years as technology advances. Now I sit side by side in the museum’s service area.
But the real show starts upstairs in an open space which are arranged in chronological order all the normal cars in one way or another and have linked the existence of the name Porsche. For car enthusiasts is a special experience, whether their love is as a source for car Mercedes, BMW or Zonda. Beyond being a producer museum in Stuttgart, Porsche Car Museum is a dedication brought civilization. For others, an initiatory experience at least interesting and why not, the place where passion can begin!
Iconic Porsche numbers appear on the exhibition walls. After 356 follows 550, sports car that opens the world of motorsport over the German manufacturer. 911 no longer needs no introduction. It is probably the most successful sports car in automobile history. Initially called 901, after the project name, model number 911 received after the Peugeot claimed that France is the only country allowed to use the indicator with a zero in the middle. From 1963 until now has never left the 911 Porsche collection and actually affected regardless of many models that have emerged subsequently.
Concepts have never seen the light of day on the market are genuine Porsche museum.Panamericana (note, not Panamera) had a say in developing the 911 Targa and Boxster cars. But otherwise, except the logo and round headlights make only vague design model Porsche we have grown accustomed. Who knew that the German was going to launch at a time and a low-cost model, something like Dacia Logan? C88 was intended for the Chinese market and would cost around $ 6,000. Never went into production, but low-cost similarity Renault group has over 13 years is striking.
There’s only race car. It does not mean however that the list of Porsche models ready to participate in auto racing are “just” race cars. 917 Spyder GTS Carrerra 924, 956, they dressed in “skin” or 917-they Rothmans tights as a pig ready for slaughter.
