Tips for Buying a Used Car

Some of us buy used cars because they want to save money, others cannot afford a new one. No matter what your reasons for buying used car are, you should prepare yourself in advance. There are many things you should know and be aware of. The following tips will help you get most out of your money.

Prepare in advance

There is no need to hurry into buying the car. Always decide what kind of a car you want to buy and then search the internet for dealers with the best prices. Also check the information provided with advertised cars. There is often a good reason behind all those “bargains” you can find out there. Cars in question are often heavily damaged or lacking some vital parts.

Bring someone with you

Unless you have a lot of knowledge about cars, I suggest you to bring a friend or two with you. Of course, the more knowledge and experience with cars they have, the better. Dealers will usually tell you only the good part and forget about the rest. Their goal is to persuade you into buying their merchandise. On the other hand, a friend of yours is there to help you. He/she will certainly point out any irregularities, if they are present.

Check out the engine

Engine is the most important part of the car. If it is damaged, the bargain could turn into money sink as you would have to buy a new one. Inspect it closely and ask your friend to do the same. Even if everything looks fine, sit in the car and fire it up. Something inside the engine could be broken and the wrong sound will surely let you know it.

Check the exhaust

This is very important too. Very dark exhaust means that something is wrong with the car. It might be the engine or some other parts of the car. Avoid buying such a car or at least bargain for a better price as you will have to invest into repairs soon.

Inspect the exterior

Scratches or other damage on the car are usually not that important for its function. However, if you care about the car’s appearance, then look for them. They may even help you when bargaining for a better price. Make sure that any irregularities can be easily and inexpensively repaired. Otherwise your “new” car might get much more expensive. Also check out the tires. If they do not match driving standards of your country, either ask for new ones or bargain for lower price.

Inspect the interior

It is important for you to make sure that interior of the car is functional. Check out the seats for any damage. Electronics should be checked too. See if lights are working as they should be. Try the radio and any other electronics. Try the seat-belts to see if they are damaged or not.

Take a test ride

Test ride can often reveal some previously invisible problems with the car. Always ask for it and if dealer does not allow you to test the car, the chances are that there is something wrong with it. It is important to check out whether the car reacts as it should. Trying the breaks is a must. Also listen to all the sounds as an odd sound can point out a problem too.

Make sure the vehicle is not stolen

Often stolen cars are offered for sale amongst the used cars. Check out the chassis number. If it is damaged and unreadable then the chances are that the car is stolen. Also ask the seller for insurance. If he fails to show it to you, then the car could be stolen too.

To conclude, buying used car is nothing easy. It can be very tedious and time consuming. It is always a good idea to bring a friend or two with you. Car should always be inspected closely and tested before you buy it. This way you can be sure that you are getting the most out of your money. If the price seems overinflated to you, then do not hesitate to bargain for better one. Dealer wants to sell it and there is nothing wrong in using this fact to your own benefit.
