Is Suction or Gravity Better to Change Your Oil?

Changing your oil seems like it should be relatively simple.

Changing your oil seems like it should be relatively simple. Empty the engine of oil, then replace the filter and oil. It’s becoming a lot more popular to change your oil with a suction or siphon method, though. Given the rising popularity, though, is the suction method just as good?

The traditional oil change

Gravity has been the method of choice to drain oil out of an engine for a very long time. A removable plug at the bottom of the engine holds the oil in. When that plug is removed, gravity drains the oil out of the engine. Mechanics will probably use this process to change oil, depending on where you go. This process is more likely to remove the gunk as part of your oil pan.

Changing the oil with a siphon

Recently, new machines are making an appearance; they use a siphoning or suctioning method to change the oil. Originally designed for boats, these machines attach to the dipstick tube and suck the oil out of the engine. As long as the oil filter is nevertheless changed every time, these machines supposedly work also as gravity oil changes. Some claim that these oil changes even get a lot more oil out of the engine and make it cleaner. Important things might get missed with this oil change, though.

Do suction oil changes work?

In the end, a suctioning oil change will probably work about as well as gravity oil changes. No matter the method, you need to consist of a filter change with each oil change. Check with your mechanic or quick-lube shop to find out what method they use to change the oil – or even ask to view, if you’d like. No matter what type of method is used, it is most important to just make sure to change your oil.</p>

Great article. I prefer gravity oil changes because I believe this method allows more gunk, sludge and heavy part/icles to get out. I also prefer leaving the oil nut open for 5-8 minutes instead of the conventional 2 minutes because even though its just little drips after the first 2 minutes, I want my engine as clean as possible and a few extra minutes is not a big deal for the purpose.
