Prepare Your Car for Winter

Check your car and be sure it is properly prepared for winter. A drop of temperature to freezing can put a strain on your battery. Be sure it is properly charged. A slow start can make your alternator work harder to charge the battery when it does start. Have your battery checked out at a battery testing service. They can identify if it’s the battery, alternator or another electrical problem.

Prepare Your Car For Winter

It doesn’t matter if you do live in Georgia, we still have cold freezing weather and it can wear on your car. Any temp that drops below freezing can play havoc with your car battery. Take some simple precautions to insure that your car will start after a freezing night. Keep your car properly maintained. You may need to change the grade of your engine oil. Look in your owners manual for instructions. Cold weather can also reduce tire pressure. You should check that often and keep tires inflated to the right pressure.

Is your battery in proper working order? Batteries experience a chemical reaction that reduces their power in cold temperatures. If your car is slow starting it puts undue strain on the battery. this will tax the alternator and make it work harder to recharge the battery when the car does start. Keep your battery fully charged to perform properly. If you have slow start and are not sure it’s related to the battery, have it checked out at battery testing service. They can identify if it’s your battery, alternator or other electrical components.

If you belong to AAA you are entitled to a free maintenance inspection at any approved Auto Repair ship. They will inspect your car and recommend any maintenance or repairs. If you have an old battery and want to check it yourself, unscrew the cell caps on top, usually four or six in all, and see if there is water in the cells. If water is not covering the metal plate inside each cell, add water as needed. Don’t use tap water. It must be distilled water. A normal battery will last four or five years before it dies, at this point replace it.

Be sure to keep your car is in good repair. Even the slightest malfunction can cause trouble while driving. Schedule regular maintenance according to your cars age and condition to avoid or at least minimize problems and emergencies.
