Problems with Cars That Have On-Board Diagnostics

Car owners should be aware that cars below 1992 and some even older have computer diagnostic installed that might not allow for a regular mechanic to troubleshoot.

Some time around 1992, cars have been manufactured to have On-Board Diagnostics (OBD).  The reason for this is for emission controls.  All vehicles are required to have the OBD as it is a computerized system practically operating how the engine runs.  The computer makes sure that emission control is at the right level.  If the system senses that emission is not in proper order “check engine light” on your dashboard could blink and that probably means repairs needed.  The truth is the car can actually run with only emission problems.  In older cars without OBD, it is not a problem!  With OBD it is costing us more to maintain our cars.  What is being asked of car owners now is to spend more on car maintenance to have cleaner air. The OBD has been in place for more than 15 years now, can they quantify the benefits it has given to people.  Are we really spending more having cleaner air to breath now compared to 15 years ago?

It is said that vehicles nowadays are less prone to defects thus having longer warranties.  Longer warranties could mean up to 5 years longer than what used to be 1 or 2 years warranty.  Once the warranty is up you’ll need to buy a brand new car if you would not want to be spending on repairs no longer covered by warranty. It would be alright for moneyed people but what about those who can not afford it?  Not even all the car owners of first world countries will be able to afford it!
