Drive Safely and Happily

People panic if they get struck in traffic congestion. Here are a few thoughts to de-stress yourself.

  • If you are early and procrastinate, there is a possibility of being late! However, if you are already late and however hard you rush, you will still be late!
  • However worse the traffic jam is, you are bound to reach your destination some time or other, some day or other. So, why stress out and reduce your lifespan!
  • If you use public transport, pick a book or novel that you are yet to complete. Traffic jam means you get more time to finish a few more pages, if not chapters
  • If you drive yourself in a car, this is the nice time to listen to some music (not to the noise of your horns!)
  • If you are on a two-wheeler, this is an opportunity to flex those muscles. Do some stretching and twisting of torso kind of exercises.
  • Traffic moves because there is more space in the front, not because you are honking from behind!
  • Be a courteous driver. Smile to others who happen to stare at you. They will either:
    • Smile back, giving you the satisfaction of making one happy.
    • Give back a weird look wondering why you are smiling at them or if they know you. Remember to note down their crazy expressions and laugh internally!
  • Smile at the funny side of each occurrence around you. If a biker jumps in front of you, you have few good reasons to smile:
    • Imagine how funny this joker is practising his circus tricks right in front of you
    • You get to watch the circus free of cost, from wherever you are – on the road, in the traffic
    • Relate this activity to the gibbon swinging through the branches and you can think that his/her evolution is not complete yet
  • The traffic jam is the nice spot to do some deep breathing exercises, only if you are inside a car. Do not attempt this while you are in an open space, as in the case of two-wheelers. Breathing in all those smoke is not good for your health.
  • If you are struck in immobile traffic jam, text those who are expecting your arrival. Try to add humor. Once I texted my boss that “Severe traffic congestion. I am distributing Digene (digestion-enhancing pills) along with the traffic cop to clear this! Will reach in an hour once route is clear :) ” The reply was “Okay Doc! Make sure, congestion does not evolve into dysentery :) ”. We both had a hearty laugh!
  • Remember traffic jams are a test for your driving skills and the assessment for your vehicle’s braking skills. You can study the performance of the engine in low speeds and take necessary action.
  • Ultimately, how well you reach the destination is determined by how well you had enjoyed the trip.

Bon voyage, every time you pick the vehicle or choose to commute!

Or like this morning, my friend’s doctor’s office called him to ask him to come early as there was traffic problems. We did and arrived early and had to wait for hours. There was less traffic than we have seen in ages.

lol – I have only driven unsafe once and it was after a long and stressful day of work. I always go no faster the 5 mph over the speed limit, never got a ticket and have never been in an accident. Well I was driving home and I got stuck behind a car that went 10 mph for almost 30 miles on a road with a 40 mph speed limit. I floored it and past him in a no passing zone. I realize it was unsafe but at the time I was so stressed out :(
