Toyota is the largest car maker in the world. However, the past few months have been scary for the car giant, headquartered in Japan. In the last months of 2009 and in 2010 it has recalled more than 9 million vehicles, including the popular hybrid car, Prius, for defects in the vehicles.
Toyota has initiated 8 recalls, the last being on 12th February, 2010, to fix various mechanical problems found on a handful of models. However, until recently, Toyota had not been taking this seriously; it had been putting on the blame for road accidents to irresponsible drivers and manufacturer of vehicle parts. This has been shameful for Toyota as the company had long been established as an icon of trust in car manufacturing all around the world. Moreover, its efficient manufacturing process was envied, studied and imitated by other manufacturing companies.
The blames of these embarrassing recalls, however, should not go only to engineers and workers in the manufacturing plants. In the past decade the company has expanded very rapidly thus making its newer plants disoriented with the company’s standards. Also, the high management has remained quite conservative. The board of directors, like most Japanese companies, consists of only Japanese men.
Due to these recalls, even the most loyal of Toyota fans now are considering other car companies for their next car.
