Why Does My Dog Dig Holes in My Backyard All The Time?

Below is an article teaching you the reasons and how to stop your dog from digging holes in your backyard.

Teaching your dog not to dig holes in your backyard is easier than you think. I’m sure if your reading this you’ve scolded your dog, tried using repellant, and etc to try and keep your dog from digging holes, but let me tell you. Training your dog not to dig holes is a lot easier than you think.

Requirments:

1. Your time

2. Your patience

When a dog digs a hole in your backyard, it isn’t because he/she doesn’t like its owner. It is because either its trying to get the owners attention or because there is something interesting in the dirt that is attracting it to the dirt.

On the part about the dog trying to get your attention, it is easy to fix. This is where your first requirment comes in. You need to spend time 1 on 1 with your dog and just play around with it. Go on a walk, play fetch, chase it. Do whatever you can to just have fun and make your dog feel happy and tired to the point where your dogs tail is wagging, and its breathing hard through its mouth with saliva drooling down its mouth. If you can do that even every 3 days, I can guarantee your dog won’t dig any more holes. Now, if you don’t play with your dog after you have been playing with it every 3 days, then your dog will start digging holes more frequently trying to get your attention so you will play with him. This is where your patience comes in. Instead of thinking to yourself “My dog didn’t dig holes for the longest time but he’s digging holes AGAIN! Gah!” and getting mad, you should take a deep breath, and instead of blaming the dog, you should blame yourself for slacking and not exersizing your dog. (excuse me if I sounded offensive because there was no intention of being offensive).

If you have been exercising your dog but its STILL digging holes, then there must be something in the dirt. This is again where your time comes in. Take your time to closely examine the dirt. Get a shovel and start turning the dirt over, and spend some time looking for something that might attract your dog. If you can’t find anything, then just get some water and soak the spot with water as it will suppress anything that might be smelly in the dirt.

I hope this guide helped you. If my methods didn’t work, you should think about getting some high grade dog repellant to spray across your yard but the thing about that is that it takes money and the effects wear down as soon as it rains.
