Onstar App for iPhone Can Control Car

This article describes the OnStar smartphone app that will come standard with certain GM vehicles in 2011.

Currently OnStar is standard for one year on most new GM vehicles like Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC, but people who buy their GM car, truck, van, or SUV in 2011 will receive an supplemental tool that improves the usability and productivity of the already valuable OnStar technology suite. Starting with the roll-out of the 2011 General Motors vehicles, consumers will be able to  get a powerful smart phone app that can control key functions of their automobiles. Drivers will no longer be required to stand near their car in order to unlock doors, operate horns and lights and even start the ignition. Once they have received their OnStar app and completed a secure set-up, users can control the previously stated functions from anywhere as long as they are connected to an online network.

GM suggests that the application would be helpful for people want to run the air conditioning before entering their car or who have forgotten to lock the doors. Aside from security and comfort, the app can provide safety by displaying vital diagnostic information such as fuel levels, tire pressure, vehicle tracking and much more. In addition, the app will have a button that can connect customers directly to OnStar customer service and roadside assistance.

Though they are not available yet, the apps are currently functional on the iphone and android operating systems. GMC says they are working aggressively to bring the applications to market while focusing on the needs and preferences of their customers.
