This isn’t the unloaded weight of the trailer, however, but is instead the fully-loaded weight of the trailer after it has been completely loaded. Once you’ve figured out your total tongue weight, it’s then pretty easy to figure out the right weight capacity needed. Step One: Measure The Trailer & Vehicle Height
With your vehicle and trailer parked on a level surface, use a trailer tongue jack and a level to make sure that your trailer is perfectly parallel with the pavement it’s resting on. When that’s done, measure and write down the height of both the trailer and vehicle. This is so you can ascertain the distance from the pavement to the top of the trailer coupler, as well as the distances from the pavement to the bottom of the rear and front bumpers.

The next step is to place the chains on the spring bars and attach them to the head. When that’s finished, raise the trailer coupler and then slowly back the towing vehicle so that it can be coupled.
Step Five: Couple The Trailer
Couple the trailer and then lift the coupling point up using your trusty trailer jack. Make sure to raise the couple approximately 3-inches above the level position.
Step Six: Engage The Brackets
Using the spring bar chains as your guide, make sure to position the spring bar hookup brackets. Using the bolts that came with the unit, mount them onto the trailer frame. Now, the spring bar chains can be attached to the brackets. When both sides are hooked up the same vertically, make sure to pry the brackets back into their locked position. This is done using the lift handle.
Step Seven: Finish Installation
The trailer jack should now be retracted to allow the full weight of the trailer is resting on the hitch. Double-check to make sure the distances between the ground and the front and rear bumpers are 1/2-inch of the original measurement. Adjust the number of links on the spring bar chains to decrease or increase tension, and adjust the tilt of the head unit as needed. When that’s done, install all of the hardware needed to finalize the installation as recommended by the product’s instructions.
