Be the Best Driver on the Road

Driving is a dangerous business, but we can follow all the rules and try to keep ourselves and our fellow drivers as safe as possible.

Driving is the one thing almost everyone has to do. So lets be the best darn drivers we can be. There are numerous ways we can drive better, be safer, and stay out of trouble on the road. We can always fasten our seat belts and obey all signs on the road. Never drive while drinking or let anyone else drive while drinking. Beyond that there are rules to make us and everyone on the road around us safer.

  1. Be sure your car is in good working order and service your car routinely. If you see something wrong take it in right away to be checked out.
  2. Always stay alert while driving. If you feel you might nod off roll down your window and let the air blow in your face, if that doesn’t help, take the first exit and pull off the road, pull in a parking lot and take a short snooze. If you are on a long trip stop at a motel and have a good sleep. Better to be late than cause an accident.
  3. Stay calm while driving. Don’t drive if you are enraged or upset. Cool off first. And don’t play music that will send you off to dream land. Play something peppy that will keep you alert.
  4. Keep your mind on the road and the drivers around you. Stay aware of any problems that might crop up. If the car slows down in front of you be ready to slow down.
  5. Make other drivers aware of you. Don’t be afraid to tap your horn or flash your lights if you suspect other drivers are unaware of you passing them or that you are behind them. Be friendly but it’s better to offend someone than have an accident.
  6. Leave as much room as possible between you and other cars. You can’t always do that in heavy traffic but do it when you can. You have a much better chance of avoiding an accident the further away you are. If you see another car moving erratically, stay away from it.
  7. Be respectful of other drivers. If lanes are merging let at least one car in and another if you can. If you arrive at a four way stop at the same as another car, let them go first.
  8. Keep a wide field of vision and check you mirrors constantly. Know the position of all cars around you.
  9. Don’t fix your vision on any object. Constantly survey your surroundings and keep your eyes on the road. No sight seeing while at the wheel. Don’t change cassettes or talk on your cell phone. If you feel you must, then pull off the road until you can give your full attention to driving.
  10.  All cars have blind spots so be aware of yours. I really became aware of this when I pulled directly out in front of a car after looking both ways. Blind spots can deceive you into thinking no one is approaching you or is behind you when actually someone is. Take short glances over your shoulder to double check but don’t lose sight of traffic in front of you.

Ruby I don’t drive and there are people out there walking the streets that are very happy I didn’t. Some things you are meant to do and others you are not , driving was one of these things for me. Excellent article Ruby , although I don’t drive I do know the rules of the road and you have stated them very well in this article. Very well written and very informative.

Essential tips even for experienced drivers, there are far too many people injured or killed on the roads every year and I’m sure some of these accidents could have been avoided with better care.
