It’s very important you get a good nights rest before you drive. Driving takes a lot of awareness and it’s important you have enough energy to do it. Getting around 8-10 hours of sleep at night is ideal.
If you are driving for longs periods of time (vacation, road trip) make sure you get about 10 minutes of break time. Do some stretching or walking so you can relax a bit and get back on the road. Also, if you are driving with a friend you can ask if they want to swap. Maybe the two of you could drive for an hour and and half and then the next goes.
Try to eat some food so you can stay alert while driving. Don’t try to eat sugar to keep you active as that will go away soon. You need to eat a full hearty meal to keep your body active and alert. Also, drink something that has caffeine in it if you need to. Something like coffee or tea would be great.
It also helps to know when you are losing focus. This can help you become more aware of when it becomes unsafe for you to drive. If you are yawning constantly, your head starts to go to its side, your eyes hurt or you have trouble focusing on the road. If any of these signs start to show up it means you need to take a break.
