Steering

The steering’s job is obvious, but steering systems have to be carefully designed to work in conjunction with the suspension. The steering system must allow the driver to keep the car pointing straight-ahead, even when hitting bumps at high speed, and the driver must be able to steer the car without too much effort.

When the steering wheel is turned, if the front wheels both turn through exactly the same angle, the tyres will tend to scrub and wear out very quickly. This is because for the car to turn in a circle, the wheel on the inside of the turn needs to turn through a larger angle than the wheel on the outside of the turn. The steering and front suspension are designed to allow this to happen.

Many cars are equipped with power steering, to reduce the effort required to turn the steering wheel.

Most power steering systems use hydraulic pressure to increase the effort applied by the driver. An engine-driven pump supplies the hydraulic pressure. The system has to be carefully designed so that the amount of assistance is proportional to the amount of effort applied by the driver, and the driver can still “feel” what’s happening to the front wheels.

Steering problems

Basically, the same comments made under “Suspension problems” in my “Suspension” article apply (link is http://athingforcars.com/driving-safety/suspension). The most common problem is poor front wheel alignment, which can cause tyre wear.

Worn steering components can cause excessive free play at the steering wheel, and if you notice this problem, it should be dealth with as soon as possible.

Problems with power steering are usually due to leaks or air in the hydrawulic system, or an incorrectly adjusted or broken pump drivebelt. If the power steering fails, the steering will still work, but the steering wheel will be harder to turn.

If you think there may be a problem with the steering, have it checked as soon as possible – never take any risks where the steering is concerned.
